Happy Independence Day weekend to all those celebrating — and happy 250th birthday, America.

It's a holiday weekend, so I wanted to do something a little different with today's edition.

Hopefully you’ll have some downtime this weekend, so I've pulled together a few travel moves worth making before work picks up again on Monday.

And I have a favor to ask at the end. If you've enjoyed my content, please take a look.

📋 In this edition

1. Book winter and spring break now

Now's the time to lock in winter and spring break trips.

Airfares and hotel rates keep climbing, and there's little downside to booking now — you can always change or cancel later if plans shift. (It's also a good time to start hunting for award inventory for early 2027.)

If a fare drops later, you can claim a credit for the difference — as long as you avoided the basic ticket.

2. The can’t-miss offer

The best all-in-one travel credit card — the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card — is offering a rare 100,000-point welcome offer.

You'll earn it after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first three months.

The card carries just a $95 annual fee, and I've already laid out why it makes sense for beginners, intermediates, and even seasoned travelers.

I've carried the pricier Chase Sapphire Reserve® for years, but I just applied for the Preferred and was approved.

The two cards complement each other nicely, and the Preferred's refreshed perks more than offset the $95 annual fee.

If you've been on the fence, this is the weekend to move.

3. Mid-year status check-in

Now that we're halfway through the year, it's time to check in on your status goals.

I'm well ahead on requalifying for American Executive Platinum and World of Hyatt Globalist, but I'm lagging on United Premier 1K.

I'll share more about my United strategy in the coming weeks. For now, I'm dusting off my United Club℠ Card to speed up requalification.

As surprising as it sounds, I could earn IHG and Southwest A-List status for the first time in years, since I might hit $75,000 in annual spend on the Chase Sapphire Reserve®.

4. Reserve your username

I love this move.

WhatsApp is rolling out usernames, so people can reach you without your phone number.

I won't have to hand out my digits to everyone, and it should help when I switch to an international eSIM on the road.

Reservations opened this week, and I'd grab yours ASAP before your preferred handle is gone. (The full feature rolls out later this year.)

5. Status match season

Early July is often the best time of year to start a status match or challenge.

If you've been thinking about switching airlines or hotel chains, many programs will give you a head start if you already hold elite status with a competitor.

Start a match or challenge in July, and you can often ride that status through the end of the following year — in this case, Dec. 31, 2027.

Here's a quick primer with links to the relevant info:

Hotels

  • Best Western Rewards — Instant match, no stays required

  • Choice Privileges — Once-per-lifetime, no stays required

  • Hilton Honors — Instant Gold status, extends with stays

  • IHG One Rewards — Not currently offered

  • Marriott Bonvoy — Call to request a challenge

  • World of Hyatt — Not publicly offered

  • Wyndham Rewards — Instant status, extends with stays

6. Updated EES + TSA tools

If a trip to Europe is on the calendar later this summer, make sure you're caught up on the EU’s new immigration system.

EES line in Athens earlier this week

I just updated my EES guide with more FAQs and improved my free EES wait-time predictor.

And if you're flying this weekend, don't forget my live TSA wait-time tracker so you give yourself enough cushion to make your flight.

7. Fresh credits just dropped

It's a new month, quarter, and half-year, which means a fresh batch of card benefits just reset.

Some of the bigger ones include:

  • American Express Platinum Card® — a new up to $300 Fine Hotels + Resorts credit (good now through December), plus quarterly $100 Resy dining and $75 Lululemon credits.

  • American Express® Gold Card — your second up to $50 Resy dining credit for the year unlocks now through December.

  • Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card — a fresh up to $200 Hilton Resorts credit for July–December, plus the quarterly up to $50 airline flight credit.

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve® — the biannual credits have reset: up to $150 for StubHub/Viagogo (activation required, ends Dec. 31, 2027), and up to $150 for dining at Sapphire Reserve Exclusive Tables via OpenTable.

  • Bilt Palladium Card — a new up to $200 hotel credit (two-night minimum) for the back half of the year.

I'm a chronic procrastinator on these, but I'm promising myself I won't wait until the last two weeks of December to scramble through them.

🙏 Feedback — and a favor

I've been writing this newsletter for almost eight months, and it's time for my own mid-year check-in.

I'd love your feedback. (Hit reply — I read every single one.)

  • What's working?

  • What would you change?

  • What could I do better?

Even if you don't have feedback, one thing would help me enormously: refer your friends, colleagues, and family.

It's free to sign up, and I love helping more people make the most of their travel.
